Hurricane Ike

As you have undoubtedly heard in the news, Hurricane Ike is headed our way. It is expected to hit the Texas coast as a Category 3 storm and cause widespread destruction. Officials who conducted the mandatory evacuation of the Galveston area didn't mince words with the stubborn people who refused to leave. They told them that they faced "certain death" and asked them to write their name and social security number on their bodies with waterproof ink so officials could identify their bodies during cleanup.

Even though we live in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area, Ike is expected to cause some damage here. High winds, rain, power outages, and gasoline shortages are strong possibilities.

In response to the state warnings, mom and I ventured to our local Walmart last night to get some supplies. We were expecting people to be swarming all over the store, desperate for flashlights and batteries. This was not the case at all. We had no problems finding flashlights, batteries, water, or candles. There was absolutely nobody on these aisles while we were shopping. Weird. Either we are overreacting or people don't listen to the news!

Well, regardless, we are ready.
